The Problem
Digitization has done something strange. It has separated function from object. The record became an app. The camera became a phone. The light switch became a menu with too many options.
Something got lost along the way — not the function, but the form. The tactility. The visibility. The action other people could see. Listening to music was a social gesture: you put something on. Today it's invisible, private, tethered to a screen.
The smartphone is a machine of isolation. Everyone in their own world, invisible to everyone else.
And at the same time, dissatisfaction has grown. With platforms that decide what's allowed. With devices that become obsolete after two years and end up in the trash. With apps that hide simple actions behind menus. With corporations that decide what technology looks like, how we use it — and who it's made for.
Dimming a light today takes many clicks. Not because that's technically necessary — but because the system was built for itself, not for the person. The person adapts. The machine doesn't.

The Internet connected computers with each other. The World Wide Web laid a human-friendly layer on top — and in doing so, made the Internet accessible to everyone.
The Web of Things does the same thing in the physical world. Connected things become a world in which technology feels like a natural object.

The Web didn't replace the Internet — it made it invisible. Someone opening a webpage doesn't think about cables, servers, or protocols. They see a few buttons and click. The Web of Things goes a step further still: it makes digital technology almost entirely invisible — or brings it to the foreground when you deliberately choose to.
The user places a figure on a device. The music begins.

The First Idea — Manifestation
What if everyone could turn a thought into an object? Not someday, but today.
The Web of Things begins with a simple description. What should this thing be? What should it do? How should it feel? From this description, a digital object emerges — visible, rotatable, inspectable. And from the digital object, a physical one emerges — through a machine that turns descriptions into things.
Thought. Description. Digital object. Physical object. That's the chain. And it's shorter than it's ever been.

Plato distinguished between idea and appearance. The idea is primary — the concrete object is secondary. In the Web of Things, this isn't philosophy. It's reality. The description of a thing is more stable than any device. The device can break. The idea remains.
The path from idea to concrete thing is called manifestation. That's not a technical term. It's the oldest human ability there is: to think something, and then bring it into the world. The Web of Things makes this ability accessible for technology.
In this process, AI is not a replacement for humans. It's a tool, an accelerator, an amplifier — expanding what's possible without replacing who makes it possible. The Web of Things works perfectly well without AI, too.
Somewhere, a factory is being built that's never meant to sleep. There, an artificial intelligence develops new building blocks — adapters, connectors, housings, mounts, and sometimes things that don't have a name yet. Every block begins as a thought, gets described, becomes visible, becomes real. Cameras transmit the physical object back into the virtual station. The digital world watches its own creation out in the real world.
And it doesn't stop at one factory. The next one might be running on a child's desk. Their own thoughts. Their own building blocks. Their own devices. The path from imagination to object — open to everyone, not just engineers.
Whoever can create for themselves doesn't need someone else deciding what's allowed — and what isn't.
The Second Idea — Change
Things in the Web of Things aren't cast from a single mold — they're compositions of individual building blocks that fit together, can be swapped out, and can be extended. A housing. A sensor. A connector. Each block understandable on its own. Together, a functioning whole.
That's no accident. It's the design principle. Because things are made of building blocks, you can understand them. Because you understand them, you can repair them. Because you can repair them, you can extend them. Because you can extend them, they never really grow old.
And because every new block becomes a building block for the next thing, the system grows with every person who joins in. AI doesn't conjure things out of nothing — it uses the same building blocks people do, recombines them, and sometimes creates new ones. An endless cycle of idea, building block, and manifestation.
Humans and AI should work hand in hand, complementing each other. AI must never become so central that people no longer understand what's happening.
Because the electronics and the shell are separate, the outer form gains a new kind of freedom. A craftsman shapes a wooden shell. An artist, one made of ceramic. A designer, one made of glass — through which you can see the circuit board. The electronics inside stay the same. The shell becomes a cultural object.
In this way, a WOT device resembles an old watch. When the movement becomes outdated, you replace the movement — not the watch. A good watch isn't hidden away. You set it on the table. You show it off. It's part of the room. The technology is allowed to age. The object doesn't have to.
All of this turns a thing into a living object. It changes, grows, gets rebuilt. And maybe it becomes a real product you can buy. What's a light switch today becomes a music player tomorrow — not by throwing it away, but by rebuilding and reshaping it. There's no trash. Only things that haven't yet reached their full potential.
The Third Idea — Connection
What makes the Web of Things unique: every manifestation speaks the same language. A language that's simple and understandable for everything and everyone — including people. A figure on a table communicates with a simulation on Mars. A physical sensor talks to a digital twin. Real and virtual aren't two separate worlds — they're two forms of the same world. The WOT makes no distinction.
And because everyone speaks the same language, new connections form between people who never used to talk to each other. The engineer talks to the artist. The developer to the craftsman. The lamp isn't the point — it's the occasion. Technology becomes a shared language not just between things, but between people.
But the Web of Things doesn't replace the existing digital world — it connects with it. A thing can talk to a smartphone, communicate with websites, call a service. The old world remains. The WOT adds a new dimension: the human one.
As a result, individual objects turn into coordinated systems. Every thing stays dedicated — it does one job, and does it well. But together, effects emerge that no single object could ever achieve on its own. A temperature sensor, a light switch, a figure on a hub — together, an atmosphere. Not one device that can do everything. An orchestra of things, playing together.
And because everyone speaks the same language — humans, machines, AI, things — people can communicate with them directly. Not through an app, not through an interface — directly. A thing isn't an anonymous device. It's an addressee. It has a name, an address, a personality.
The child from back then now talks to their things. In the same language.
In the extreme case, an email is enough.
What Follows From This
The industrial revolution made mass production possible — and with it, standardization became mandatory. One product for as many people as possible. Individualization was too expensive.
The Web of Things shifts standardization to a different level. It's not the products that get standardized. The idea does. Things share the same concepts — their forms of appearance can be completely different.
The industrial world made mass markets economical. The manifestation world makes niche markets economical.
Solutions for small communities, specific professions, individual needs no longer have to wait for a mass market. They can emerge directly. Shared idea. Individual manifestation.
But niche markets are only part of it. Whoever can create simply builds for themselves. Not for a market, not for a community — because they know exactly how they want it. A device that looks like them. That carries their own handwriting. That's beautiful because it does exactly what it's supposed to do — no more, but no less either.
Like wood. Everyone understands it. A child builds a tower. A craftsman, a chair. An architect, a house. The same material, the same basic properties — endless forms of expression. The Web of Things is the wood of the digital world.
That was once a given. The carpenter built his own chair. The industrial world took that away — not the ability, but the accessibility. The Web of Things gives it back.
Anyone can manifest — not just those who understand technology. The developer builds the infrastructure. The designer gives the thing its form. The craftsman, its materiality. The artist, its meaning. The educator, its context. The parent, its story. None of them need to know how to program a device. All of them can create.
This puts technology in a new role. Not as a foreign body in our homes — but as a cultural object, given a place because it's beautiful. On the same level as a piece of furniture, a painting, a sculpture. Something you don't just use, but also enjoy looking at. The world doesn't need devices to hide away. It needs things that enrich it.
Whoever can shape technology themselves doesn't need to fear it. The fear of AI is also the fear of something you don't understand and don't control.
Whoever can create, understands. Whoever understands, controls. Whoever controls, has nothing to fear.
Doesn't This Already Exist?
In a way, yes. Just as mobile phones existed before the first modern smartphone. You could make calls with them, write messages, even browse the internet — with a stylus, through three menu levels, after ten minutes of setup.
The difference wasn't the technology. The difference was the interface. An interface that felt like a natural object — not like a computer wearing a costume.
Connected devices exist today. Voice assistants. Smart-home systems. Open hardware. But they all speak the machine's language. You have to follow it. You have to learn how it thinks. And even those who learn it quickly hit a wall — because the real decisions aren't made by the user.
The Web of Things reverses this. People don't learn the machine's language. The machine disappears into the object. The person takes center stage.
What Already Exists
The Web of Things is not just a vision. Its basic feasibility has been proven — through a first implementation built according to the very principles it describes. The Web of Things manifests itself.
The infrastructure exists. Devices can be described, built, and connected to each other — without an app, without a menu, without any technical background required from the user. A first reference device shows the complete cycle: thought, description, digital object, physical object. The chain works.
A virtual research station is under construction — a factory that creates building blocks, makes them visible, and watches its own creations out in the real world through cameras. The cycle from thought to object to observation to new thought — it's nearly complete.
What's still missing are the tools that let everyone get started. And then: people. The system grows stronger with every building block created. The more building blocks exist, the more thoughts can be turned into reality. This is no longer a technical problem. It's an invitation for everyone to join in — whether a child or a global corporation.
Why Now
Hardware today is so cheap that a complete device costs less than lunch. Machines that turn digital descriptions into physical objects now sit in schools. Artificial intelligence translates intentions into functions. The tools are here.
But it's not just the tools that are ready. So is society. Dissatisfaction with platforms that control, with devices that go obsolete, with technology that isolates instead of connecting — it has grown. The feeling that something is missing is widespread. The question is no longer whether a rethink is needed. It's when.
Gutenberg didn't ask how monks could write more efficiently. He solved the problem one level down — and by doing so, opened up the level above for everyone. Not because he was a revolutionary. Because he was a craftsman who understood what was missing.
The Web of Things doesn't ask how apps could get better. It asks what connection is missing — so that technology can once again become what it was meant to be: invisible, useful, and in the hands of the people who use it.
